The History of the Grand National: A Race Apart

The History of the Grand National: A Race Apart

For over 150 years, the Grand National is run at Aintree. This history details the great winners such as Red Rum - 3 times across the finishing line; the great personalities, such as Bob Champion and Dick Francis; the spectacular wins such as the outsider Foinavon who missed a pile-up in 1960 to win at odds of 100 to 1. The momentous feats of horses and jockeys; the outrageous anecdotes, the heartbreak, the scandal, the ecstasy of a fabulous sporting occasion are all chronicled.

Gallant Sport: The Authentic History of Liverpool Races and the Grand National

Gallant Sport: The Authentic History of Liverpool Races and the Grand National

From the point of view of a fan of the Grand National this book is simply the best ever written about the race. Mr. Pinfold eschews the standard, received history of the National and, instead, has delved into the true background using contemporary sources. Not content with simply re-hashing the usual repetitive 'facts', he has turned received opinion on its head and, quite simply, rewritten the history of this great race. No longer should 'Lottery' be considered the first winner (it was 'The Duke') nor should Maghull be considered the original home of the National - it has always been Aintree.

Steeplechasing: A Celebration

Steeplechasing: A Celebration

Steeplechasing began in County Cork in 1752, when Edmund Blake bet Cornelius O'Callaghan a cask of wine that his own hunter could beat O'Callaghan's over a line of country from Buttevant Church Spire to the steeple of St Leger at Doneraile nearly five miles away. Thus "steeplechasing" was born. Anne Holland's book celebrates the great moments in this sport's 250 year history by portraying steeplechasing's story thematically. She draws portraits of the sport's progress during the 19th century which saw, in 1839, the first running of the Grand National, and brings evocative memories of steeplechasing and those characters who participated in it in the 20th century. Finally she brings readers into the 21st century and the modern Grand National.
